December 12th 2024 – Kathryn Attwood

What a fantastic meeting we had last week, I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly

enjoyed the talk ‘from page to stage’ delivered by the very talented Kathryn Attwood.

Kathryn engaged us right off the bat with her interesting presentation on writing

original play scripts, and all the things one should consider, when attempting to adapt

those existing works, for the stage.

We learned all the ins and outs of copyright procedures, we were given useful

pointers for the process of determining what to leave in a script so that die hard fans

are satisfied, but also how to handle a script which can shine as a standalone play,

for those who may not know the original book you have chosen to adapt. Always

hoping that you’re writing although shorter than the original story, a script that excites

and enthuses those who see the play, to leave with a hunger to read the book that

inspired your script.

I found it fascinating hearing all the things to ponder over, when deciding to write as

a playwright. It is a totally different discipline of writing style but one I believe our

members enjoyed, considering the engagement offered towards Kathryn during her

Q&A closing session.

Kathryn was knowledgeable and gave relative anecdotes, to support our

understanding of her subject matter.

Much positive feedback was given to your committee members during our coffee

chat time, of what a great speaker Kathryn was and how interesting she was.

Thank you, Lucy, for the lovely mince pies, they went down a storm!

Excitedly, we can say, some familiar faces and new ones, wish to join our WSW

family, so will be joining up and coming along in the New year!

As always, our lovely Roger ran our raffle, where I believe there were 3, maybe 4

lucky winners!

Lastly Kathryn laid out a competition for us members to enter should we wish, where

we are to write 3 or 4 pages of original script dialogue, for the opening scene of a

fictional play. Kathryn said we should begin the script with a short narrative just to set

the scene before going into dialogue. She would pass onto Doug a couple of

examples that he can provide online for us to help us get started.

Doug closed the evening with a huge thank you to Kathryn, a recap of the

competition rules, and a reminder that our first evening back next year, is Thursday

9th January and to start the new year off with a swing, we will be holding the popular

demand, Open Mic night.

This just leaves me to wish a merry Christmas to everyone and a happy New Year. I

Can’t wait to see you all on our first night back!

I have also set up our first Instagram account, where I upload highlights from our

monthly meetings along with fun, we have at WSW participating in outside writing

events, such as poetry recitals etc.

So, if you have an Instagram account please follow and like us. We want more

people to see what a fantastic group we are and become a member.

The Instagram account is westsussexwritersclub. All one word and you will find our

logo in the top left corner of the page.
