The Art of the Short Story – Juliet West and Claire Fuller

In this talk and workshop session, novelists Juliet West and Claire Fuller will outline the essential ingredients of a short story, as well as lead the audience through exercises in creative writing. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn from two skilful writers who have both enjoyed great success using this form.

Juliet West’s short story credits include Beauty in the Bog, winner of the H E Bates Prize 2009 and subsequently published in the Sunday Times online magazine. Her first novel, Before the Fall, was described by Alison Macleod as being ‘As poignant as it is powerful’. Her second novel, The Faithful, also historical fiction, was published in 2016. Juliet grew up in Worthing, West Sussex, and studied History at Cambridge University. She worked as a journalist before taking an MA in Creative Writing at Chichester University, where she graduated with distinction and won the Kate Betts’ Memorial Prize.

Claire Fuller’s many credits for short stories include A Quiet Tidy Man, which won the Royal Academy and Pin Drop short story prize 2016. She is a novelist and artist as well as a short fiction writer, and her first novel, Our Endless Numbered Days, won the 2015 Desmond Elliott Prize. Her second novel, Swimming Lessons, was shortlisted for the Encore prize, and her third, Bitter Orange will be published in August. Originally, she studied sculpture at Winchester School of Art and began writing at the age of 40. She has a Masters (distinction) in Creative and Critical Writing from The University of Winchester.
